Assistant Principal for Academics

  1.       POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal for Academics

    II.      GENERAL DESCRIPTION
    The Assistant Principal serves as a key member of the core administrative team, working collaboratively with the Principal to fulfill the school’s mission.  The Assistant Principal assists the Principal in the administration of the school, has a complete understanding of the school philosophy and is committed to supporting and implementing the vision of the school. Living and witnessing faith in Jesus Christ, the Assistant Principal joyfully leads the academic program in accordance with the school’s mission.


Status: Exempt  (Grade 16)

Reports to Principal

III.      MISSION, ACADEMICS, CATHOLIC IDENTITY

    • Practicing Catholic who is able to lead the integration of the academic program with the  school’s mission

 

  • Able to communicate in both English and Spanish

 

  • Leads curriculum development to promote the school’s mission and Catholic identity
  • Works with the Principal to define and implement professional development
  • Provides leadership to Academic Department Chairpersons and to the Director of Guidance
  • Responsible for professional evaluations of teachers, guidance counselors, librarian and other academic department personnel
  • Serves as Acting Principal in the absence of the Principal
  • Has the ability to provide leadership in the accreditation process
  • Understands the meaning of “hiring for mission” and assists with interviewing for new teachers

 

III.     ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Establishes an Academic Program with clear understanding of each person's inherent dignity
  • Coordinates the Master Schedule and Course Selection Guide
  • Determines process for selection of textbooks with understanding of the school’s mission
  • Works with Department Chairperson for textbook and technology planning
  • Assists in planning of agenda for faculty meetings and local school in-services
  • Supervises the school’s discipline program
  • Collaborates on the implementation and revision of the school handbooks
  • Coordinates scheduling for the school’s calendar
  • Able to communicate with parents in both English and Spanish
  • Oversees the acquisition and training of substitute teachers ensuring compliance with  certification and diocesan screening procedures
  • Thinks deeply about right and responsible use of social media and technology in the intellectual, moral, and spiritual formation of students and faculty
  • Initiates, plans and monitors testing programs in collaboration with school counselor
  • Schedules students for academic courses and implements/supervises grading and grading policies
  • Responsible for policies related to the academic standards of the school
  • Establishes the formal observation schedule
  • Maintains complete and accurate personnel records according to the diocesan policies
  • Establishes positive school-community relations
  • Maintains cooperative relations with all in the school community
  • Promotes respectful and positive school relationships
  • Attends and actively participates in school activities and functions
  • Keeps informed of current instructional practices
  • Supervises students in school and community settings to assure their safety and decorum
  • Actively participates in the process of continuous school improvement
  • Maintains personal  professional development records
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Principal
  1. REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
  • Practicing Catholic who is joyfully faithful to the church’s tradition and teaching
  • Thinks, plans and makes decisions with prudential judgement and right reason
  • Minimum requirement of  two years of classroom teaching experience
  • Able to communicate in both English and Spanish
  • Certifiable in school administration by the Arizona Department of Education
  • Meets Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan policy
  • Organized, creative and able to show initiative
  • Possesses leadership skills; efficient with time management; strong communication skills
  • Ability and experience with handling conflict and solving problems
  • Understands the complementary relationships between faith and reason
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others as well as ability to delegate
  • Knowledge and understanding of good teaching techniques
