  • General Description

 

The librarian, like the teachers, assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing.   The librarian contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community.  By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the librarian cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students.  The librarian maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; understands the school’s philosophy of education; has knowledge of classical literature and imparts a Catholic worldview through the curriculum.  In addition to work in the library, the librarian, as member of a “house” within St. John Paul II Catholic High School, serves as a mentor and campus minister to students.

 

Status:  Part-time (25-30 hours per week)

Reports to Assistant Principal of Academics



III.     ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education and the mission of this school:
    • Establishes an atmosphere where students can encounter the living Christ
    • Promotes and lives the gospel values and Catholic moral teaching
    • Upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church
    • Forms students to have true freedom
  • Assumes responsibility for the leadership and management of the library:
    • Provides a positive learning environment with understanding of inherent dignity of each person
    • Organizes the library according to the Dewey Decimal System
    • Supervises and provides for the safety, welfare, and care of the students while they are in the library and on campus
    • Works toward a creation of  a Catholic community within the library and is an active participant in the school community
    • Develops and implements a daily and weekly schedule
    • Trains, supervises and encourages the volunteers in the library
    • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget
    • Carries out ongoing selection procedures for the purchase of library materials within budget limitations, based on recommendations from staff; administration, and students and the suitability with the school’s mission
    • Assumes the responsibility for the selection, acquisition, processing, and servicing of books and other library materials needed for the curricular and co-curricular programs of the school
    • Periodically consults with department chairpersons to insure the availability of professional materials in each subject area; keeps abreast of new trends and improvements in library service (including technology) through research, reading professional journals, and attendance at professional meetings
  • Supports the instructional program according to the needs of the students and the established curriculum at the school:
    • Works to support teachers who want to incorporate library research into their classes
    • Proficient with use of the library technologies at the school
    • Assures that new library books selections support the curriculum
  • Maintains accurate records in all record keeping as required by the school:
    • Adept at using the Follet system
    • Knowledge of all Computer operations in libraries, including Library Automation, cataloging systems, and reference databases
    • Collection Development Principles, and means of Acquisition, as they relate to a school curriculum
    • Internet structure, management, content creation, and  usage
    • Meets deadlines with official school reports, attendance, and statistics as required by the principal
  • Establishes positive school community relationships:
    • Communicates effectively with students and parents in accordance with the school’s communication guidelines
    • Is a positive influence, good representative, and proactive communicator
    • Maintains cooperative relationships with all in the school community
    • Cooperates with and helps promotes various curricular and co-curricular programs within the school
    • Promotes and participates in community service
    • Actively participates in school faculty meetings and in services as scheduled
  • Plans for, participates, and completes professional development to remain current with academic certifications:
    • Keeps informed of current instructional practices through professional reading and educational opportunities
    • Maintains personal professional development records
  • Performs any other job related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal

 

  1. REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
  • Practicing Catholic who is joyfully faithful to the church’s tradition and teaching  
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Understands the complementary relationships between faith and reason
  • Willing to make a public Profession of Faith
  • Thinks, plans and makes decisions with prudential judgement and right reason
  • Meets Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan policy
  • Experience with cataloging and record keeping of the library
  • Experience with the Follett System preferred
  • Communicates clearly using grammatical and respectful speech
  • Organized, creative and able to show initiative
  • Certified by the Arizona Department of Education, Library-Media Specialist Endorsement
  • Must complete the Safe Environment Training and fulfill other diocesan requirements
  • AZ  FBI Fingerprint clearance card required
