A school nurse must support the school's philosophy, policies, and goals, and act as a role model of professionalism.
Providing health care
A school nurse assesses student health needs, treats injuries and illnesses, and administers medications. They also conduct screenings, such as hearing and vision screenings.
Managing health problems
A school nurse plans for and manages acute, chronic, and emergency health problems for students, staff, and families. They also determine when students should be sent home, referred for follow-up care, or transported to the hospital.
Collaborating with others
A school nurse works with parents, teachers, social workers, and other staff to provide individualized care for students. They also communicate with outside medical professionals.
Maintaining records
A school nurse keeps accurate records in accordance with school policy.
Supporting the principal
A school nurse may help the principal prepare documents, reports, and correspondence.
